On deck: SPJ National Conference

This week begins the national conference for the Society of Professional Journalists! Originally planned to be a hybrid conference in New Orleans, the decision was made a few weeks ago to go fully virtual for another year thanks to the coronavirus (and, as it turns out, the entire area is suffering from the impact of Hurricane Ida.)

Whether you’re joining us in Zoomland or not, you should know that there are a number of votes awaiting you as registered members of SPJ. Races for all the national positions, including president-elect, secretary-treasurer and two at-large directorships are contested. Our regional director position is not contested as far as I know, but the new candidate can always use your support! Remember, in SPJ the issues are voted by delegates, but the officers are elected by the entire membership – that means you!

Click here to find out about all the candidates running for office in this year’s election. While you’re there, make sure your current email address is updated with the SPJ database. Then watch your email this weekend! Your unique ballot will be sent to you at approximately noon (EST) Thursday, and you have until noon Saturday  to register your vote.

There are a number of issues pending before the delegates this year, including discussions about the internal governance of SPJ. If you have strong feelings on the issue, be sure to share them with chapter president Elizabeth Donald (elizabethdonald@aol.com) as she serves our chapter as delegate.

Thank you for your continued support of SPJ!
