Webinar: The New SPJ Ethics Code with Dr. Chris Roberts

Last revised in 2014, the Code has undergone a year-long reexamination and revision, and all SPJ members will be asked to vote on the new Code during the national convention in a few weeks. Members who are not present at the convention will still be asked to vote, so this is an excellent time to ask your questions about what changes were made and why!

Dr. Chris Roberts is an associate professor in the department of journalism and creative media at the University of Alabama, where he also directs the Office of Research in Media Integrity in the College of Communication and Information Sciences. Roberts worked in broadcast and print news between ninth grade and 2006, a month before finishing his doctoral degree in mass communication at the University of South Carolina. His research focus is on ethics, journalism practice and the study of the emerging adults in media occupations. Roberts is vice chairman of the ethics committee of the Society of Professional Journalists, and was a member of the committee that revised its ethics code in 2014. He is lead author of “Doing Ethics in Media: Theories and Practical Applications” (Routledge, 2nd edition, 2022) and maintains the book’s website.

 

All journalists, whether members of SPJ or not, are welcome to join the chat and ask Dr. Roberts their questions. Only members for at least seven days before the convention will be able to vote, however, so make sure your membership is up to date!
